Finding Mama God: Session 3 Recap

The transformative practice of imaginative prayer with Catherine Cowell

Hey friends,

In April’s session of Finding Mama God, our friend

added a beautiful new practice to our time together: imaginative prayer. She shared how using her imagination opened a new interior landscape and provided emotional integration of formerly hidden parts of herself. She described the way this process transformed the way she approaches life. Afterward, she invited us to participate in this practice ourselves. In a 10-minute exercise, we opened ourselves to the Spirit’s leading and revelation in real time. What a gift to share stories of how we experience prayer in unique ways. I found it fascinating that Catherine’s inner-landscape included a cave, which reminded me of the legend of Mary Magdalene’s life after Jesus left this world. I wasn’t sure I could “enter in” to prayer since I was leading, but the Spirit is always available and present. She reminded me of a wonderful story, Circe by Madeline Miller, and it opened up my own inner landscape to explore. I hope to find time this week to write a story about the scene that played out in my imagination and what it reveals about Mama Spirit, me, my heavenly family, and this lovely community She is forming.

Storytelling brings us together and shapes us. Each person offered a little treasure:

’s image of tea with the Trinity, ’s description of the scent of spikenard, the oil Mary used to anoint Jesus’ feet, ’s invitation to meditate on the words of Jesus protecting Mary, harassed for defying convention in her devotion: “Leave her alone,” and ’s question for us to hold as we parted ways: “Where were the women at the last supper?” So much richness!

Have a listen to Catherine’s story and carve out space for a ten-minute experiment with imaginative prayer. And consider joining us next time!
